Compare floor, counter and pallet displays by available space, product weight and replenishment. Editorially reviewed: 2026-10-04 A point-of-sale (POS) display is a physical stand that presents products in a store. A floor display suits a freestanding placement; a counter display presents smaller items on an existing surface. A pallet display combines product presentation with a pallet base. The retailer's approved space, product packaging and in-store handling determine the choice. This guide covers merchandise stands, not digital screens. #### Floor, counter and pallet displays compared | Format | When to consider it | Check first | | --- | --- | --- | | Floor display | Freestanding secondary placement with shelves or hooks. | Footprint, height, access and weight per level. | | Counter display | Compact products on a checkout, counter or consultation desk. | Usable counter space, sightlines and product access. | | Pallet display | Promotional placement built on a pallet base. | Accepted pallet format, total height and goods-receiving rules. | #### Define where the POS display will stand Start display selection with the width, depth and permitted height at the actual location. Photograph the space and note which sides customers can approach. Consider aisles, sightlines to other products and room to replenish stock. Obtain the retailer's placement approval before construction is finalized. A floor display needs its own floor space. A counter display uses an existing surface but should leave room for service, payment and eye contact. A pallet display makes sense when the pallet base and delivery method suit the store; the pallet format must be agreed. See the freestanding format in our [floor displays](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/displays/floor-displays). #### Packaging and product access determine the display format For a POS display, record the dimensions and weight of the retail-ready unit, including its packaging. Check whether customers will take products upright, lying flat or from hooks. Cartons and bottles can stand on shelves; packaging with a suitable hanging feature may suit hooks. An open dump bin can work for robust packaged promotional items. List every product variant. Packs with different widths change how a shelf can be filled. Fragile items may need dedicated holders or dividers. Allow gripping space so a customer can remove one pack without pulling neighbouring products or the shelf along with it. For smaller retail packs on existing surfaces, consider: [Counter displays](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/displays/counter-displays). #### Plan stock capacity, loading and replenishment separately Stock capacity means the number of products in one display. Order quantity means the number of displays. Record these separately. For each level, state how many units it holds and their combined weight. Calculation example: twelve packs weighing 250 g each create a product load of 3 kg on one shelf. This calculation is not an approved load rating. The shelf, joints, weight distribution and stability must suit the complete structure. During sampling, also check access when the display is partly empty and decide who replenishes it and when. #### Match the POS display material to its intended use Floor, counter and pallet describe placement, not material. For example, a floor display can use corrugated board or be planned as a longer-term wood and metal structure. A short campaign and a regularly replenished brand area have different needs for finishes, cleaning and replaceable branding. Choose the format and intended use first. Then compare materials and construction against the actual loads. An attractive finish alone does not establish a load rating or an economical service life. For the material decision, read [Compare cardboard, wood, metal and acrylic](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/guides/cardboard-wood-metal-or-acrylic). #### Clarify assembly and delivery before requesting a display Should the display arrive flat-packed, preassembled or already filled with products? Identify the person or team assembling it and any requirements for instructions, tools and disposal of transport packaging. For a pallet solution, discuss goods receiving, handling routes and total height. A product description, intended location and approximate display quantity are enough for an initial inquiry. Add photographs, pack dimensions and your preferred date where available. Record unknown details as open points; sampling and the detailed requirements are then agreed for the project. Collect the details for the next step with the [Display brief checklist](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/guides/display-brief-checklist). #### Sources and scope - [FEFCO · Shelf Ready Packaging](https://www.fefco.org/benefits-corrugated/meet-business-requirements/shelf-ready-packaging): Background on retail presentation, handling and replenishment. The selection guidance and calculation example are editorial recommendations. ### [Display materials: cardboard, wood, metal or acrylic?](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/guides/cardboard-wood-metal-or-acrylic) Which material suits your POS display? Compare cardboard, wood, metal and acrylic by intended use, construction, care and reuse. Editorially reviewed: 2026-10-04 Material selection for a POS display depends on intended service life, product weight, finish and handling. Cardboard and corrugated board can suit printed promotional stands; wood and metal can suit longer-term structures. Acrylic is an option for transparent product holders and shelves. Combining materials can also make sense. A material name alone does not establish a load rating, service life or environmental performance. #### Four display materials compared | Material | Possible application | Planning checks | | --- | --- | --- | | Cardboard / corrugated board | Printed promotional displays and foldable structures. | Construction, reinforcement, moisture and transport. | | Wood / wood-based panels | Longer-term shelving and exposed wood finishes. | Panel type, edges, joints and surface care. | | Metal | Frames, hooks, perforated panels and structural parts. | Alloy, section, connections and coating. | | Acrylic | Transparent shelves, holders and product presenters. | Thickness, unsupported span, edges and cleaning. | #### Cardboard and corrugated board for printed POS displays Cardboard and corrugated board are different paper-based materials. Corrugated board has one or more fluted paper layers bonded to liners. For a display, the flute structure, paper grade, folds and reinforcements matter alongside the visible thickness. A printed, foldable structure can be a useful starting point for a limited campaign. Clarify how often it will be moved and whether moisture during storage, transport or cleaning matters. Load claims must refer to the actual construction; FEFCO describes different tests for corrugated board, not a universal display load rating. #### Wood and wood-based panels for longer-term displays A wooden display can use solid wood or wood-based panels. Plywood, MDF and other panels are not interchangeable specifications. Plywood consists of bonded layers; MDF is a fibreboard. Exposed edges, fixings and surfaces differ accordingly. Describe the intended appearance and in-store use. Should the wood grain remain visible, should the surface be painted, or will branding need changing later? For repeated use, consider connection points, cleaning and replaceable parts during design. #### Metal for display frames, shelves and hooks Metal is a material category, not a complete construction specification. Frames, perforated panels, shelves and hooks require an agreed metal, thickness, section shape and connection method. A slim appearance does not establish a particular load capacity. State whether the display will be moved or dismantled frequently. Discuss its own weight, accessible edges, floor contact and surface requirements. Include the desired coating and colour in the brief; suitability for cleaning or a damp environment must match the specification offered. #### Acrylic for transparent product presenters Acrylic here means PMMA plastic, not mineral glass. Transparent shelves and holders can keep the product visible. Material thickness, unsupported span, edge finishing and the type of joint are important design inputs. Describe which surfaces customers touch and how the display will be cleaned. Agree cleaning products and protective packaging for the actual material specification. Transparency alone does not establish scratch resistance or load capacity. Combinations with wood or metal also require suitable interfaces and fixings. One possible application is shown in our [product presenters](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/displays/product-presenters). #### Assess loading on the complete display The required loading follows from product weight, quantity and distribution across shelves or hooks. Provide these details for each level. Assessment should cover the connections and stability of the whole display as well as an individual shelf. A sample with representative products helps assess access, replenishment and handling. Agree the checks and how approval will be recorded beforehand. A concept image cannot establish allowable loads or guaranteed properties. For the review process, see [Sampling and approval](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/how-it-works). #### Consider material costs, reuse and disposal Compare quotes for the same intended use and scope. Construction, printing, quantity, assembly and shipping affect the cost alongside the material. A lower material price does not automatically make a solution more economical. For repeated use, plan for replacing graphics and worn parts. Separable materials and local collection routes matter for eventual disposal. Recycling or certification claims should relate to the actual specification and available evidence. A material family alone does not establish an overall sustainability advantage. Editorially reviewed: 2026-10-04 A display brief describes the product, placement and requirements for a custom merchandise stand. A product description, intended location and approximate display quantity are enough for a first inquiry. Dimensions, weight, your preferred date and photographs make planning more specific. You do not need a finished construction or print-ready design at this stage; identify any open points explicitly. #### Display inquiry checklist | Detail | What to prepare | Why it helps | | --- | --- | --- | | Product | Packaged unit: width × depth × height, weight, photo and variants. | Plan holders, shelves and product access. | | Location | Counter, floor or pallet; available space and retailer rules. | Define the format and permitted external dimensions. | | Stock | Product quantity and arrangement per display. | Check space, loading and replenishment. | | Display quantity | Required number of displays and possible split quantities. | Cost production and quote options. | | Design | Logo, colour guidelines, existing concepts or design work needed. | Agree printing and finishes. | | Delivery | Destination, preferred date, flat-packed / assembled / prefilled. | Plan packaging, assembly and timing. | | Project scope | Intended use period, budget range, sampling needs and open questions. | Identify priorities and decisions still needed. | #### 1. Describe the product and placement in the display brief Measure the retail-ready packaging, not just the unpackaged product. State the order of dimensions, such as width × depth × height in millimetres, and add the weight per unit. Front and side photographs help explain shape and access. For hanging products, include the hanging feature. Describe the available display space separately from product dimensions. Include height limits and retailer requirements. If the format is undecided, describe the location; you do not need to choose a model prematurely. For help choosing the format: [Compare floor, counter and pallet formats](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/guides/choosing-your-display). #### 2. Separate stock capacity, display quantity and budget Record products per display and the number of displays ordered as two separate figures. If several variants will be presented together, sketch their arrangement. State whether all displays are identical or need different printed graphics or product assortments. A budget range helps focus the options. Specify whether it is per display or for the whole project and whether samples, packaging and shipping should be included. Minimum quantities and practical production runs are reviewed for the individual project. For the main cost factors, see [How a display quote is prepared](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/pricing). #### 3. Prepare design, sampling and approval Existing logos, brand guidelines, a sketch or a description of the desired appearance are enough for an initial discussion. Identify missing design elements. Final artwork must match the approved construction and agreed print requirements; a general design file is not yet production approval. Identify who will approve dimensions, product fit and design. If a sample is needed, describe its purpose, such as checking fit, assembly or print appearance. Sample scope, cost and timing are agreed. Naming a contact early helps with questions and approvals. For the individual steps, see [Project process and sampling](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/how-it-works). #### 4. Specify the destination, preferred date and assembly Distinguish the preferred goods-receiving date from the start of the sales campaign. Specify the delivery country and postal code, plus a central destination or planned distribution to several sites. State whether the display should arrive flat-packed, assembled or prefilled, and who will fill it. A realistic schedule includes concepts, questions, sampling, approval, production and transport. A requested date becomes an agreed delivery date only after review. Record retailer-specific receiving conditions, such as time slots, pallet requirements or labelling. For further logistics details, see [Shipping and delivery](https://www.displayhero.eu/en/shipping-delivery). #### 5. Example of an initial display brief Fictional planning example: We are planning 100 identical counter displays for packaged cosmetics. Each display should hold twelve packs. A pack measures 45 × 35 × 120 mm (width × depth × height) and weighs 150 g. The available surface is 300 × 250 mm; we still need to confirm the maximum height with the retailer. The display will be used for six weeks. We have a logo and colour guidelines, but the layout is undecided. We would like flat-packed delivery to one address in Germany and filling on site. We will provide the preferred date, postal code and budget later. These details describe requirements, not a checked construction, minimum order quantity or delivery commitment. Your first inquiry can include open questions in the same way. Add photographs or files where useful and identify any estimates. All images are concept visualizations. They do not establish binding load ratings, dimensions, prices or lead times.
